What is a Data Retention policy?

A Data retention policy is required for scheduling a replication for a server. The policy schedule can be one-time or recurring, and the start time of the policy must be specified. The policy properties carry information about how many recovery points to keep in the disk safe

In details, The Data retention policy consists of the following:

Scheduling - The process of creating a schedule is called scheduling. You may schedule the Policy to run at a time that is most convenient to you.
Recovery point retention rules - the rules that define how many recovery points to keep in disk safe. Old recovery points are merged.
File/folder excludes - User-selected files and folders be skipped during replication. Advanced exclusion using file patterns are possible.

What happens behind the scene...

When a backup job is performed, a Synchronization is performed. During the synchronization process, a point-in-time snapshot of the disk volume is created. Deltas or block level data changes are computed based on the last completed synchronization. Block level changes are changes happened below the file system that are very close to the raw disk structure.
